Let’s be honest. Teacher morale is struggling, and it isn’t just happening in one school or one district. Teachers across the country are feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, and sometimes discouraged by a profession that asks so much of them.
After years in education, including my time as an elementary principal and now as a second-grade teacher, I know that teaching has always come with challenges. But I also know that telling tired teachers to simply “remember their why”isn’t always what they need to hear.
Sometimes, we remember our why every single day. We see it in the child who finally feels confident enough to raise a hand, the student who chooses kindness when it would be easier not to, or the little face that lights up when something finally makes sense. We haven't forgotten why we teach. Sometimes, we're just exhausted from everything else that comes with it.
So, instead of another reminder to hang in there, maybe we need to give ourselves and one another permission to find small ways to make this profession feel a little lighter.
Here are a few simple reminders for the hard days:
-
Celebrate the little victories. A successful lesson, a kind note from a student, or a moment of genuine connection deserves to be celebrated. Not every success needs to be measured by a test score.
-
Find your people. Surround yourself with colleagues who encourage you, make you laugh, and understand the realities of your day. Sometimes, a five-minute conversation with someone who gets it makes all the difference.
-
Bring joy back into your classroom. Read the silly book. Play the game. Celebrate the unexpected moment. Learning and laughter can coexist, and children aren't the only ones who benefit from a little fun.
-
Protect your peace. You can be a dedicated teacher without giving every waking hour to your job. Rest is not a reward you have to earn.
-
Be the encouragement you wish you received. Thank a colleague. Leave a kind note. Notice someone's effort. We may not be able to change every system or solve every challenge, but we can make our little corner of the world kinder.
As someone who believes deeply in educating the heart, I know that kindness, connection, and encouragement matter. They matter for our students, and they matter for the adults who show up for them every day, too.
We don't need to pretend that everything is fine when it isn't. We don't need to put a positive spin on every difficult day. We can acknowledge the hard parts while still looking for the good, supporting one another, and finding small reasons to smile.
Maybe improving teacher morale begins with making teachers feel seen, valued, and supported—not simply reminding them to be resilient.
If you're a teacher reading this today, I hope something makes you smile before the day is over. I hope a colleague reminds you that you're appreciated. And I hope you give yourself the same grace you so freely offer your students.
You don't have to change the entire world today. Sometimes, making a difference in one child's world is more than enough.
And teachers, let's remember to take care of one another along the way.
Here's to a little more kindness, a little more laughter, and a little more light in our classrooms.
Because teachers deserve encouragement, too. ❤️
With gratitude,
Jennifer
