Another week in second grade is in the books, and once again, I find myself reflecting on how much learning can happen when children are given the opportunity to wonder, explore, practice, and try again.
One of my favorite reminders comes from Alice in Wonderland:
“If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” — Lewis Carroll
In second grade, we are learning that having a destination matters—but so does the journey we take to get there.
This week, our journey took us through estimating and measuring. We practiced thinking about how long or short something might be before actually measuring it. There is something so valuable about asking children to make a thoughtful estimate, test their thinking, and then reflect on how close they were. Measurement became more than numbers and rulers; it became an opportunity to make a prediction, investigate, and learn from what we discovered.
In language arts, we continued building our understanding of the small details that make writing stronger.
We practiced when and how to use an apostrophe, paying attention to those little marks that can completely change the meaning of a word. We also worked with ending digraphs, listening carefully to the sounds we hear at the ends of words and connecting those sounds to the letters we see in print.
And, of course, our personal narratives continued to grow.
I love watching second graders begin to understand that their own experiences are worth writing about. We are working on including important details, putting events in order, and helping our readers picture what happened. Sometimes the stories are about something exciting, and sometimes they are about an ordinary moment—but when children realize that their own lives can become stories, writing takes on a whole new meaning.
And then there are the little things that make our classroom feel special.
This week, we continued enjoying two wonderful additions made possible through our DonorsChoose grants: our brand-new USA rug and our new headphones. The rug has quickly become a favorite gathering space, while the headphones are helping create opportunities for focused learning and independent work.
I am so grateful for every person who helps make these classroom experiences possible. These materials may seem like simple things, but to children, they become part of the environment where they learn, explore, imagine, and grow.
As I look back on this week, I am reminded that teaching second grade is about so much more than covering standards.
It is about helping children become confident thinkers.
It is about encouraging them to make an estimate, even when they aren't sure.
It is about trying a new word, fixing an apostrophe, listening carefully for a sound, or adding one more detail to a story.
It is about learning that mistakes are not the end of the road—they are simply part of the journey.
And perhaps most importantly, it is about creating a classroom where children know that their ideas, their experiences, and their voices matter.
Another week. Another road traveled. Another group of little learners growing a little more each day.
And I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. ❤️
