A Short Week, A Lot to Discover: Finding the Learning in the Moments of Wonder, Prediction, and Possibility

There is something about a three-day school week that makes a teacher look at the calendar and wonder, How much can we possibly accomplish?

With no school on Monday for Labor Day and Wednesday for Election Day, our second-grade week was certainly short.

But as I watched my students over the three days we were together, I was reminded of something I have learned over and over again during my years in the classroom:

The amount of learning that happens isn't always measured by the number of days on the calendar.

Sometimes, the most meaningful learning happens when we slow down enough to notice.

To wonder.

To make a prediction.

And then to find out whether we were right.

One of my favorite Beverly Cleary quotes comes from Ramona the Pest:

“She was not a slowpoke grownup. She was a girl who could not wait. Life was so interesting she had to find out what happened next.”

I think about that quote often when I watch children learn.

Children are naturally curious. They don't want to simply be told the answer. They want to find out what happens next.

And that spirit of curiosity was alive and well in our classroom this week.

Measuring, Predicting, and Discovering in Math

In math, we began our work with metric measurement and started exploring the ruler in a way that encouraged students to think before they measured.

We made observations.

We made predictions.

We tested those predictions.

And sometimes, our predictions were right.

Sometimes, they weren't.

And honestly, those moments when we weren't right were some of my favorites.

Because that's when the conversations began.

"I thought this one would be longer."

"Wait, why did I get a different answer?"

"Oh! I didn't start at zero!"

These are the moments when I see mathematics become more than numbers on a page.

Students were learning that mathematicians don't just calculate. They estimate, observe, test, revise, and try again.

There is so much learning packed into that process.

Looking Closely at the Natural World

Our science learning gave us another opportunity to practice being curious.

We began investigating a question about trees in the Bengal tiger reserve:

Why aren't all of the trees growing the same way?

What a simple question—and what a wonderful question for second graders.

Immediately, students began looking closely at what they could observe.

They noticed differences.

They wondered about possible causes.

They made predictions.

And then we began thinking about how we might test those predictions.

I love beginning science this way because it reminds children that scientists don't always begin with an answer.

They begin with a question.

They look closely at the world around them.

They wonder.

They make a prediction.

And then they gather evidence to see what they can discover.

That is exactly the kind of thinking I want to nurture in my classroom.

Maybe Short Weeks Aren't So Bad

As teachers, we can sometimes feel pressure to make every minute count.

We look at the calendar.

We look at our curriculum.

We look at everything we still want our students to learn.

And when a three-day week appears, it can feel like something has been taken away from us.

But perhaps this week reminded me that learning isn't always about how much we cover.

Sometimes it is about how deeply we allow children to think.

This week, my students learned about measurement.

They learned about rulers and metric units.

They investigated trees.

They practiced making predictions.

They tested their ideas.

They discovered that predictions don't have to be correct to be valuable.

And, perhaps most importantly, they practiced being curious.

A Little Reflection From Me

After almost three decades in education, I still find myself amazed by the moments when a child's curiosity takes a lesson somewhere I didn't quite expect.

Those are the moments I treasure.

The moments when a child leans forward.

When their eyes get a little wider.

When they say, “Wait...what if...?”

When they aren't satisfied with simply knowing the answer because they want to know why.

That is the kind of learner I hope my students become.

Not children who are afraid to be wrong.

Not children who simply wait for someone to give them the answer.

But children who are willing to wonder.

To question.

To predict.

To test.

To make mistakes.

And to try again.

Because isn't that what learning—and really, life—is all about?

Perhaps that is why Beverly Cleary's words resonate so much with me.

I don't want my students to be slowpoke grownups.

I want them to hold onto that little bit of Ramona inside them—the part that looks at the world and thinks:

I can't wait to find out what happens next.

So yes, this was a short week.

But it wasn't a small one.

It was filled with questions, discoveries, conversations, and those little moments of “I wonder...” that make teaching so incredibly rewarding.

And as we head into a new week, I know there will be plenty more to discover.

And I can't wait to find out what happens next, either.
