After her summer adventures and the arrival of her beloved orange cat, Chance, Peyton is ready to begin third grade.

And Peyton quickly discovers that being a third grader doesn't mean knowing all the answers.

It means being willing to think, try, change your plan, and try again.

🍎 A Trip to Rocky Ridge Apple Orchard!

During Peyton’s first two weeks of third grade, her class takes a special trip to an apple orchard in their own state of Maine.

Peyton and her classmates are excited to explore the orchard, learn about apples, and, of course, pick some apples!

But their day includes an unexpected challenge:

The Great Apple-Picking Team Challenge!

The students must work together to collect apples while using planning, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

And just like with many real-life challenges, their first plan doesn't quite work.

Apples roll away.

Teams get in each other's way.

Time begins to run out.

And Peyton has a choice.

She can become frustrated…

or she can try a different way.

🌟 Learning That Problems Are Possibilities

One of the messages I hope children take away from Peyton's story is that making a mistake or encountering a problem doesn't mean you've failed.

Sometimes a problem simply means:

It's time to stop, think, and try something new.

Peyton learns that perseverance doesn't mean doing the same thing over and over.

It means being willing to:

✨ Try a new strategy
✨ Ask for help
✨ Listen to others
✨ Work as a team
✨ Change a plan
✨ Keep going when something is difficult

These are skills children need not only in school, but throughout their lives.

🐱 And Of Course… There's Chance!

Peyton's orange-and-white cat, Chance, is still an important part of her world.

After the adventures of A Summer of Second Chances, Peyton is learning what it means to care for Chance while also becoming more independent.

Chance even gets to make an appearance as Peyton reflects on everything she has learned during the beginning of third grade.

Because sometimes the best listeners have four paws and whiskers! 🐾

📚 A Book for Beginning Third Graders

I especially wanted this story to capture that exciting transition into a new school year.

Third grade can feel like a big step.

The work becomes more challenging.

Children are expected to become more independent.

Friendships continue to change and grow.

And children begin to realize that learning isn't always about getting the right answer immediately.

Sometimes learning is about discovering how to find the answer.

Peyton is still learning that lesson herself.

And that's what makes her relatable.

She doesn't always get it right.

She sometimes gets frustrated.

She sometimes needs to rethink her plan.

But she keeps going.

As with the other Peyton’s Pages of Possibility books, this adventure is designed to open the door to conversations and learning beyond the story.

At the end of the book, young readers can complete reflection activities about:

Peyton was created for children who are still figuring things out.

Children who may be confident in one area and unsure in another.

Children who sometimes need encouragement to take another try.

Children who need to see that mistakes aren't something to be embarrassed about.

They are part of learning.

Through Peyton's adventures, I hope young readers see themselves as capable, curious, compassionate, and full of possibilities.
