Small Gifts with a Big Message: Welcoming My Second Graders with Love & Affirmation

Published on 11 July 2026 at 12:14

There is something incredibly special about a brand-new school year.

Long before the classroom is filled with laughter, sharpened pencils, and eager hands raised in the air, I find myself thinking about the children who will soon walk through my classroom door. I wonder what makes them smile. I wonder what they are excited about. I wonder what worries they might be carrying with them.

As I prepare for an exciting year of teaching second grade, I wanted to create something more than a simple welcome gift. I wanted every child to receive a meaningful reminder that they matter from the very first day they enter our classroom.

After spending far too much time browsing Amazon (something many teachers can probably relate to!), I found exactly what I was looking for. I discovered the sweetest collection of self-affirming bracelets, encouraging affirmation cards, colorful tulle gift bags, fun erasers, adorable pencils, and cheerful stickers. The moment I saw them, I knew they would be perfect. Find all of the items here on this link!

Each bracelet and eraser carries a simple but powerful reminder that our words—and the words we tell ourselves—matter. The affirmation cards encourage children to believe in themselves, celebrate their strengths, and approach each day with confidence. The fun pencils and stickers add a little fun because childhood should always include moments of joy, while the colorful tulle bags make each gift feel like a tiny celebration waiting to be opened.

Some people might see these as just small classroom gifts.

I see something much bigger.

I see a child who might be nervous on the first day of school finding a reminder that they are brave.

I see a student who doubts themselves discovering that they are capable.

I see twenty-something unique personalities learning that our classroom is a place where everyone belongs, everyone is valued, and everyone has something important to contribute.

As an educator, I have always believed that teaching begins with the heart. Before students can fully engage in reading, writing, math, science, and problem-solving, they need to know they are safe, welcomed, and loved exactly as they are.

Second grade is such a magical year. It is a year filled with growing independence, blossoming confidence, exciting academic discoveries, and countless opportunities to build character alongside knowledge. I hope these little welcome gifts become the first step in creating a classroom community rooted in kindness, encouragement, and belonging.

I can already picture the smiles on their faces as they receive their special bags this August. I imagine the excitement of opening them, reading their affirmations, trying on their bracelets, and simply using the pencils, erasers and stickers and realizing that someone prepared something just for them.

Those smiles will be worth every minute spent searching, planning, and assembling each gift.

Sometimes the smallest gestures leave the biggest impressions.

I cannot wait to meet my incoming second graders and begin this wonderful adventure together. August can't come soon enough!

Here's to new beginnings, open hearts, growing minds, and a classroom where every child knows they are valued from day one.
